Cedar Shelf, Studies
A small still-life series photographed on the cedar shelf above the desk. Books, folded paper, a cup, and one plate of light.
The shelf itself is nothing special: one plank of old cedar the previous tenant left behind. In late afternoon a narrow rectangle of light lands on it for about twenty minutes.
I photographed the shelf on eleven consecutive afternoons using the same 90 mm lens, the same aperture, and the same tripod position. Only the objects on the shelf were exchanged.
The resulting sequence is a small study in what changes when almost nothing changes. A pencil moved half an inch. A book laid open. A folded map replaced by a folded letter.
